Becoming Jealousy -Proof
Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but who can survive the destructiveness of jealousy (Proverbs 27:4, NLT).
Jealousy, mild or violent, is one emotion that we have to resist, if we must grow spiritually. It pushed Cain to kill his only brother, Abel, in a gruesome way. It is a big havoc to harbour jealousy in one’s heart. In fact, jealousy can be more terrible than witchcraft.
It takes a mind not totally yielded to the Holy Spirit to be controlled by jealousy. It is also a by-product of insecurity. Envy prevents a man from seeing his own uniqueness and incomparability. Nothing and no one is good in the eyes of a jealous fellow. Something in him hates it when someone else is praised. He is selfish and will do everything to promote himself and reduce others just to appear as the ‘best’.
I buy Margaret Atwood’s opinion that “You can only be jealous of someone who has something you think you ought to have yourself”. Jealousy does not only affect others, it harms the jealous. In the words of William Penn; “The jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves”.
Do you want to be untouched by jealousy? Then develop peacefulness, competence and confidence; and ask God for the grace to grow in grace. We are not called to do the same things. And even where we are called to do similar things, we can still do them in our different, unique and God-glorifying ways. I pray, May you not be caught in the destructive web of jealousy. In Jesus name!
