Deeper

DeeperDeeper

‘When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch” ’ (Luke 5:4; NIV).

In a seaside country, it’s not strange to see people gather on the shore of the sea. That was similar to what happened in the days of Jesus’ earthly ministry. He was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee and great crowds were pushing in on him to hear God’s word. To prevent being pushed into the sea and to create orderliness, Jesus climbed into an empty boat that belonged to Simon. He told Simon to push it into the water so that He could use the boat as His pulpit.

Meanwhile, the previous night, Simon had tried in vain to make any catch. It was a bad time for him as he had no fish to fetch him any income on that day. Peter was not lazy at all. He worked all night. But unfortunately, he got nothing. He must be feeling very unhappy and frustrated before Jesus asked to use his boat. Jesus saw his frustration and felt his pain. The Lord shared in his sorrow and was moved by his plight. So the Saviour was ready to help him out.

And just like Peter, a lot of folks put a lot of effort into this year so as to achieve their goals. In fact, they seriously worked hard at what they knew how best to do. But it was just like fishing in ‘fishless’ waters. They hoped to have bountiful harvests at the end of this year. But alas, what they got was far from their expectations! A lot of people who believed that they would have made a financial headway by now are still struggling financially. In many lives, nothing seems to have happened differently.

But there was something about Peter. Despite his predicament, he was selfless enough to allow Jesus use His boat. And because he made his little contribution to God’s work – at a time when he could have reacted angrily to Jesus – God gave him a net-breaking catch! It was quite surprising that it was in the same water where he failed earlier that he now got abundant blessings.

I pray that you shall succeed where you earlier failed. When you allow God to use you or something you have, the Lord will guide you into bigger opportunities, connections and blessings. As we look forward to starting the new year on a good note, may we not miss our opportunities to be super blessed. In the mighty name of Jesus!

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, as we move into a new year, open my eyes to deeper opportunities and blessings. In the name of Jesus!
