Dreamers’ dilemma

Dreamers’ dilemma

Then Joseph had another dream and told his brothers about it. “Listen to this dream,” he said. “The sun, moon and eleven stars bowed low before me!” (Gen. 37:9, NLT).

Many of us are familiar with the story of Joseph, who happened to be one of Jacob’s twelve sons. Joseph’s brothers hated him for a number of reasons. His first offence was to report to their father some of the bad things they were doing (Gen. 37:2). To make matters worse, Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his siblings because he was born in Jacob’s old age. So Jacob made Joseph a very beautiful robe, and this increased his brothers’ hatred for him (Gen. 37:3,4).

Joseph had a dream that suggested that his brethren would later bow before him. His brothers were getting angrier by the day but Joseph didn’t seem to think that he was already saying too much. He had yet another dream and told his brethren that the sun, moon and eleven stars bowed low before him. In other words, his father, mother and eleven brothers would bow to him! At that point they could no longer stand the sight of Joseph. He had indeed gone too far!

Joseph never interpreted his dreams. In fact it was as if he was seeking their opinion on what they meant. But they interpreted them and were unhappy about them. They could not stand the fact that Joseph had such an enviable future. They focused on Joseph but failed to see their own positions too as the sun, moon and stars. If that dream meant that they were the stars, that meant they had great futures too because ‘star’ is synonymous to greatness! But they were so blinded by their hatred that they didn’t see that God had plans for them too.

When he had those special dreams, just like it happens to many folks today, Joseph thought that those dreams would manifest in the next few days or weeks. How wrong he was! He would have to journey from under his father’s roof to the revered Pharaoh’s palace. And in-between those two points were many years of servitude, pain, affliction, persecution and imprisonment. Joseph saw where God was to take him, but didn’t see the trainings that he had to undergo.

Thanks to God that despite everything he passed through, the fear of God and commitment to his divine vision helped him. Eventually those dreams came to pass and God did through Joseph a greater thing than his father or brothers had imagined! And they still bowed to him in the end! But then, God’s purpose for Joseph was not to bring the glory to Joseph but to Himself. Joseph realized this and still forgave his brethren wholeheartedly. He was truly Godly indeed. I pray, receive the grace to stand till your heavenly visions receive the power of manifestation. In Jesus name!
