Hardened hearts

Hardened hearts

‘…Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts… (Hebrews 3:15 NKJV).

Some years back, my jaw sagged as I listened to a thought-provoking story. There was a crusade programme in Lagos, Nigeria. It was to hold for some days. Hundreds of thousands of people were in attendance. The preacher was highly anointed and so, all manners of people were there: the sick and the healthy; the saved and the unsaved; the old and young; and so on. In fact the crusade ground was filled to capacity.

In this gathering also were a young man and his girlfriend. They came around too to partake in the event. After the preacher’s message, the young man was deeply touched. So when the preacher invited people to come out and surrender their lives to Jesus, this young man too was going to join other thousands of people to get saved. But unfortunately, he was intercepted by his girlfriend. She convinced him that he didn’t need to give his life to Jesus, probably because she felt that somehow, it would affect their relationship.

The lady was no longer comfortable with their stay on the crusade ground. So she made them leave the venue. But sadly, they’ve not gone too far before a fast-moving vehicle accidentally hit this young man. Bad enough, he died instantly! The lady was distraught. To think she had ruined another life by her negative and sinful influence was a reality too shocking for her to grasp.

Needless to say, the existence of God, heaven and hell became real to her. She came face to face with one of life’s rudest realities. Here was the lifeless body of a man who was talking with her just moments ago. And the story didn’t end there. Before the crusade was over, she was back at the crusade ground. She narrated her ordeal to others and then surrendered her life to Christ. It’s so disquieting that while she was now qualified for heaven, she had prevented another soul from getting there.

Are you tempted to think that God was unfair to that man? Or are you of the opinion that God shouldn’t have forgiven that lady? Well, these questions might not be as important as what we can learn from the incidence. Now what about you? If you are not yet saved, what have you been doing with your chances of salvation? That young man never knew that that was his last chance. I appeal to you, do not harden your heart to God’s voice. Come to Jesus today. He will save you from destruction and death. May God help you to do so. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: I receive the light of redemption and reject satanic traps of destruction. In the mighty name of Jesus!
