…it is destined that each person dies only once and after that comes judgment’ (Hebrews 9:27, NLT).

I want to share a story I heard sometime ago. There was a village where a Mr. Death visited the villagers and took his next victim to another city called Eternity. At a point it came to the knowledge of all the villagers that once Mr. Death visited anyone, it meant bidding families and friends farewell.

So, everyone secretly and openly prayed that he would not know their dwelling place. But their prayers didn’t seem to be answered as Mr. Death didn’t stop coming at unexpected times.

Not long afterward, it was the turn of a middle-aged man to receive Mr. Death. Permit me to simply call the man Smith. Mr. Death’s style was to carry a note with him containing the list of all the villagers in the order of his visitation. The name of the person he was to take was usually at the top of the list. Once he took a particular fellow away, he struck out his name and prepared to go for the next person.

Smith had devised a plan before Mr. Death came to him. He told himself he would do everything possible to appease Mr. Death and make him change his mind. So, he treated Mr. Death to a sumptuous meal and expensive drinks. He ate until he was thoroughly filled and satisfied.

Mr. Death took permission to use the toilet. And that was Smith’s chance to carry out his plan. He quickly took Mr. Death’s note and noticed that his name was at the top of his list. He quickly erased his name. Smith then put his name as the last name at the bottom of the list. He dropped the note and pretended like nothing had happened. His visitor was back and decided it was time to execute His plans.

So, he told Smith: “Smith, I am so impressed with your hospitality and the delicious meal you gave me. I actually came here to take you away but because of your generosity, I will not take you. Instead of picking from the top, I have decided to start from the bottom of my list!”

Dear friend, no one can outsmart death. Our time on earth is not as long as we think. Each tick of the clock, each setting of the sun and each closing year are solemn reminders that we are gradually heading for a sure eternity. It’s a journey we must all take.

But the question is, “To where?” Eternity has two end points – Heaven and Hell. If your ears can hear, if your eyes can see, if you can speak and if your reasoning is clear, you still have the opportunity to embrace Christ and reject the devil and his sinful works. Anyone who rejects God’s warnings cannot escape His judgment. I pray, may we live with eternity in view. In Jesus name!
