Preparing for a fall

Preparing for a fall

‘Therefore, this is what the sovereign LORD says: Because you think you are as wise as a god, therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners upon you, the most ruthless of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and defile your splendor!’ (Ezk. 28:6,7, NLT, ESV).

There was a prince whose heart was proud, going around saying, “I am a god. I sit on God’s divine throne ruling the sea.” But God told him he was a mere mortal. Really, he had amassed great wealth with his great wisdom and deep understanding. He piled up gold and silver in his treasuries and this has made him very proud. He started disregarding others and saw in himself a god. And what are ordinary people expected to do to a god? Worship him of course!

This was when God’s verdict came: “Because you think you are as wise as a god, I will bring against you an enemy army, the terror of the nations… they will bring you down to the pit, and you will die there on your island home…pierced with many wounds…You will die like an outcast at the hands of foreigners. I, the sovereign LORD, have spoken!” (Ezk. 28:6-10). Hmm… These are terrible pronouncements, aren’t they?

Like the prince of Tyre, there are individuals today who are full of themselves. They are so wise in their own eyes that they see others as unsmart. They feel they are informed and well-read; so they cannot learn from anyone. If such people go to church, they don’t pay serious attention to the message if the preacher’s academic qualification is lower than theirs. They are highly selective about who they relate to and take advice from nobody.

Does anyone have any reason to have a proud heart? One can be very exposed, wealthy, handsome or beautiful. One could have travelled to many parts of the world; be the head or the founder of a multi-national organisation or highly anointed of God. One could be so versed in music, academics, medical knowledge or political wisdom that even kings seek him. But no matter who or what you are, somebody somewhere is still better than you.

God loves the humble and promotes them, but He resists and demotes the proud. There is nothing a man has that wasn’t given to him. Everything he has, he got from here. We came to the world naked and bare. We won’t take anything when we are leaving. The more God promotes us, the humbler He expects us to be. Before you even act it out, God can see pride if it’s already building up in your thoughts. Pride repels Him but humility attracts Him. I pray, may we receive the grace of Godly simplicity. In Jesus name!

Today’s Corporate Prayer: O Lord, deliver me from all forms of self-promotion. In Christ Jesus mighty name!
