Sacrificial commitment to holiness

Sacrificial commitment to holinessSacrificial commitment to holiness

Judges 11:35 “And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.”

This was Jephthah, a mighty man of valour who helped the children of Israel fight against the Ammonites. He made a vow unto God, and said, “If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

Unfortunately, his daughter came out, and he could do nothing to revoke his vow, other than to say, I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot take it back.

Brethren, there is a sacrifice to make to ascertain to the LORD, that you are married unto holiness. When you have given up something so dear to you like a right hand, or a right eye because of holiness, you will never want to go back anymore.

Think about Daniel. This Daniel was a holy man. And he was committed to holiness and devotion unto God. But there was a law that was set up which contradicted the commitment of this holy man. Despite the repercussion of disobedience to that law, he insisted: “I will rather obey God than man.”

As the scripture tells us, when Daniel learnt that the writing had been signed, and he understood the law of the Medes and Persians, that is, a law that cannot be reversed. He went into his house; and his windows being opened in his chamber toward Jerusalem. Because of the prayer of Solomon, “LORD, if thy people sin against you, and they are carried into captivity. Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication toward this temple, hear them.” That was what Daniel was doing. And he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before God, as he did aforetime.

Hold on! There are many methods of praying. You can be walking on the street and praying, you can be doing something and also speaking to the LORD in your heart, he understands, and he hears you, at least to avoid dying in the lions den.

But this holy Daniel, his own faith, his own committment, his own holiness, didn’t have any worldly method to do it. So, they caught him, and threw him into the lions den. But holiness closed the mouth of the lions. Because of his holiness, and the commitment he had to the LORD, the Lord was with him even in the lions den.

Brothers and sisters, what have you given up because of holiness? What is the thing that cost you so much, that you have sacrificed for holiness? Is there a book of record about you in the heaven of an agreement with the Lord that whatever happens, whatever people say or do to you, HOLINESS will be your watchword all the days of your life?

Thus saith the LORD, “Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a convenant with me by sacrifice.”
