The consequences of being a slothful and unprofitable servant

The consequences of being a slothful and unprofitable servant

Mathew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The LORD in this place warns everyone who professes to be his, to be fruitful and labouring. Every believer whose faith is in Christ, and is genuinely reconciled to God, is altogether a labourer in the vineyard of God, none can be idle. But we see here that the LORD gives every one of us talent according to his grace for the furtherance of the gospel, the expansion of his kingdom, and for the edification of his body (the church.)

But herein, some are discontent with what God has given them, and so become jealous of those who by God’s free grace and mercy have more to what they have, and in that stead not improving theirs which God has given them. Our Lord who knows every being, he being the Creator of all, dispense severally as he will, and commands, “Occupy till I come.”

Therefore, we have to use that which the LORD has made available to us to serve God therewith, bringing in the sinners by all means, encouraging and instructing the believers to press on towards entire sanctification, knowing that anywhere the work of sanctification breaks out, the whole work of God prospers, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever our Lord has commanded us.

Also, being humble and honest to all; despise the gainsaying of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and scribes who are enemies of righteousness, who shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for they neither go in themselves, neither suffer them that are entering to go in.

And at the evening of life, when the LORD shall come to reward his faithful labourers who have traded with what he gave them, not superficially and hypocritically: by only mouth talking, and social posting, but practical demonstration of the reality of the grace of God. And every one found faithful will be commended, and shall be made ruler of greater things, cause he was found faithful.

But to the unprofitable servant, who kept his, and never made use of it, but was stingy and envious of those who are making use of what God has given to them, shall be cast into the furnace of hell. You’ll say why? what has he done? Yea, it is true he had not done good. But neither is he charged with doing any harm.

Why, for this reason, for barely doing no harm, he is consigned to outer darkness. He is pronounced wicked, because he was a slothful, and unprofitable servant. So mere harmlessness, on which many build their hope of salvation, was the cause of his damnation! And there shall be weeping of the careless thoughtless sinner; and the gnashing of teeth of the proud and stubborn.

Therefore, that good thing which was committed unto thee, keep by the holy Ghost which dwelleth in us, for the profit of the household of faith, cause thou shalt give account before the King of glory.
