Understanding God’s will

Understanding God’s will

‘And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean” ’ (Mk. 1:40, ESV).

If God’s will concerning a thing is unknown or uncertain, it remains unsure if God will do it for us or not. It is therefore important to establish through God’s word if something we desire is God’s will for us or not. If we discover it is God’s will for us, we pursue it. But if it’s not His will, we give up on it. Many people’s prayers remain unattended to because such prayers are not His will.

We read in Matt. 26:38, 39 how Jesus’ soul was crushed with grief to the point of death. He prayed earnestly, “Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me; nevertheless, not as I will.” He prayed this prayer three times until He was sure that it was God’s will for Him to take that cup of suffering. So, He gave up the idea that it should be taken away from Him.

In our opening text, we see a man with leprosy come to Jesus and begged Him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus was deeply moved, put out his hand, touched him and said, “I am willing, be cleansed.” Instantly the leprosy was gone, establishing the fact that it was God’s will for us to receive healing. The Bible says: “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed. I Peter 2:24, NKJV.

To know God’s will today, we turn to God’s word. The Bible reveals the mind of God and it shows us if a thing is God’s will for us or not. A way of showing our commitment to receiving the answers to our prayers is to have scriptural verses for what we are praying about. When some people went to a certain man of God for prayers, the first thing he usually asked them was to give him Bible verses that confirmed that what they were asking for was in line with God’s will. More often than not, such people couldn’t even support their prayer requests with a single Bible verse!

Salvation, healing, prosperity, success, breakthroughs, fruitfulness, promotion, and so on, are God’s promises to His children. Again and again, He confirms His provisions for all these in His word. The Bible says every good and perfect gift is from God (Jas. 1:17). So, dear friend, you have an assignment to get at least five scriptural promises that cover each of your requests. Then, make them part of your prayer points as from now. The God who answers prayers will answer us. In Jesus name!

Today’s Corporate Prayer: Father, help me to know your will concerning my request and to stand firmly on it. In Christ Jesus mighty name!
