Evil cravings

‘Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” (Mark 6:25, NKJV).

Man always wants to have all the money, power, fame and luxuries of this world. He wants to gain the respect and admiration of others. Man craves for anything that can satisfy his good and, at other times, evil desires. In his blind pursuits, he often fails to differentiate between what he really needs and his unnecessary wants. Until a man realizes his real needs, he will always desire wrong and destructive things.

Such is the case of Herodias, her mother and King Herod. It was Herod’s birthday and Herodias dazzled her father (Herod) and his guests with her dance. So the king said to her, “Ask me anything. I’ll give you anything you want. I’ll split my kingdom with you if that’s what you want!” Wow, what a rare privilege! She might never have this kind of privilege again in her lifetime. So like any thoughtful child should do, she went back to her mother and sought for her counsel. Her mother told her, “Ask for John the Baptist’s head!”

It is surprising that the best thing a person could crave for in this world is the death of another fellow! Well, the father reluctantly gave her what she asked for. But I wonder if such a gift later made her feel better or bitter. Dear friend, who is your counselor? What is your greatest desire in life? If you had a life-changing opportunity, what would your request be? If someone asks you what you could do with just a thousand dollars, will your response be convincing enough?

Money is a destroyer in the hands of a purposeless fellow. So are fame and power. God Himself once asked a man named Solomon to ask for what he wanted. He simply asked God for the wisdom and knowledge to be a God-fearing leader. Even God was impressed by his request! It turned out that God didn’t only give him the wisdom and knowledge he requested, but also gave him unequaled wealth, honour and fame!

What you want in life really matters. If your priority is wrong, you need to sit back and reprioritize your goals and desires. God’s word says: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…” (James 1:5). I pray, may God’s wisdom guide our choices. In Jesus name!

Today’s Corporate Prayer: O Lord, deliver me from every unprofitable and destructive craving. In Christ Jesus mighty name!
