Tended and untended hearts

‘And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure (of thought and study) you give (to the truth you hear) will be the measure (of virtue and knowledge) that comes back to you…’ (Mk. 4:24, AMP).

We must be selective about what we listen to because it might influence us positively or negatively. That’s why the Bible counsels us to meditate on (and pay attention to) God’s word always. Giving the right measure of thought to the truths of God’s words makes room for spiritual growth and fruitfulness. Unfortunately, many folks take God’s word with levity. They have no time to study it, let alone ponder on its truths; hence, it couldn’t produce the right results in their lives.

Earlier Jesus had taught the crowds a parable about a sower who went out to plant some seed. As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road and birds ate it. Other seed fell on shallow soil with underlying rock; it sprouted quickly but soon withered due to lack of deep roots. Some fell in the weeds and got strangled among the weeds. Some fell on good earth and produced bountiful harvest.

The different landing spaces of those seed represent the kinds of heart or mindset with which men receive God’s word. The only people whose lives will produce the bountiful harvest of grace, virtue and knowledge from the seed of God’s word are those who are willing and committed enough to give continuous attention to its truths, as a guide to how they live privately and publicly.

When you have the opportunity to receive God’s word, with what kind of heart do you receive it? Is it with a road-side heart, a rocky-heart, a thorny-heart or a well-prepared heart? The kind of heart on which God’s word falls is determined by you. When you set your heart on vanities, it becomes difficult for God’s word to fall on your heart’s fertile ground. May you find the grace to make His commands your priority. In Jesus name!

Today’s Corporate Prayer: O Lord, strengthen me to make my heart a ready ground for your words of grace always. In Christ Jesus mighty name!
