The costliness of sin

But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you (Matt. 11:23,24 NKJV).

Some cities saw the mighty miracles of Jesus when He was physically on the earth, but they didn’t repent. They continued in their unbelief and sins. Jesus was so cross with them that He began to upbraid them. He proclaimed woe upon Chorazin, Bethsaid, Tyre, Sidon and Capernaum. In fact, He said that things will be more terrible for them on the judgment day than the people of Sodom who were actually destroyed by fire!

Until we begin to understand our sinfulness, sin will not appear ugly to us. But the sinner must receive the reward of sin which is death. That’s how costly sin can be! God does not want anyone’s death so He sent His son who surrendered Himself as the scapegoat for man’s sins. Therefore, unless you want to receive the wages of sin, which is death, you need to accept Jesus ultimate sacrifice by surrendering your life to Him.

There is no easy way of talking about the horror of having to pay dearly for your sins, especially when Jesus already paid with His own life. The judgment day is a very serious day. Anyone who is not on the Lord’s side will be finally and eternally separated from Him. That is the real death, not the physical death. When a branch is separated from the tree, it dies. When a stream is separated from its source, it dies. When a fish is separated from water, it dies. When a man is finally separated from God, he is dead indeed! How fearful!

We have been given the power to choose what we want out of the options we have in life. Hear God’s word: “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, that you…might live!” (Deut. 30:19, NLT). Jesus said in Matt. 10:28, “Fear God who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” You can actually choose whether you want to fear God or men.

If you have not been saved, you urgently need to do so. If you have backslidden, you equally need to return to Jesus. Confess your sins to the Lord. Invite Him into your heart. Read and meditate on God’s word. Through prayers, stay in touch with the Holy Spirit of God who now dwells in you. Fellowship regularly with your brethren in Christ. I pray, may we not choose death over life. In Christ Jesus name!

Today’s Corporate Prayer: Father, deliver me from the power of sin and sinfulness. In Christ Jesus mighty name!
