And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth (Luke 12:15, KJV).

That we all have needs is a statement of fact. But we should take heed to differentiate between need and greed. While God responds to man’s needs, he frowns at his greed. Actually, greed is one of the worst evils on the earth. The question is, ‘Why do many folks always want more?’ And why is it that when they get that ‘more’, they still want more ‘more’?

Only very few have realized that life is not all about ‘more’. I agree with B. C. Forbe that ‘the man who has won millions at the cost of his conscience is a failure’. There are some people who can do anything to get money. A lot of us are yet to discover that happiness is not about getting what we don’t have, but to be thankful for what we do have.

Greed has put a lot of people in trouble. The question is, ‘Do you have to be like someone else?’ ‘Must you have the kind of ‘what someone else has’? Why do we get involved in vain comparisons and competitions? Lots of folks have lost their peace, health, joy, friendships, jobs, money and lives simply because of ‘more’.

Do you have an idea how covetousness could ruin a person’s life, career, health and destinies of children yet unborn? Ask a man called Gehazi in II Kings 5:1-27. It is the blessing of the Lord that makes one rich because he adds no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22). I pray that God will help us so that we can actually love happiness more than ‘more’, in Jesus name.

Today’s corporate prayer: I shall not be a slave to greed. In the mighty name of Jesus!
