Dealing with the elder

Rebuke not an elder but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren (I Timothy 5:1; KJV).

One thing that should be respected in life is age. And that’s in line with the word of God. Some youths make sarcastic remarks about older people. Some educated youths slight unschooled elders. They ridicule their manner of talking, sense of dressing, and refer to their way of life as old-fashioned and outdated.

In today’s verse, the Bible reveals it that you shouldn’t talk to elders the way you talk to younger ones. If you have to correct an adult at all, it has to be with humility and regard. It is also important to note that even if you are a leader or head of an organisation, it doesn’t change the word of God that you should not talk harshly to an elder.

Just like there’s a difference between respect and timidity, there is also between boldness and rudeness. Some folks find it difficult to express their mind without being rude in the process. It’s good to be bold without being rude.

Do you want to obey God’s word and be respected, too, when you attain old age? Do you want the blessings that come with having regards for the elderly? Then, stop censuring elders. Instead, treat them like fathers and mothers. May we receive the grace to do this. In Jesus name!
