‘…it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment’ (Heb. 9:27 ESV).

I read about a man named Allen. He was a young naval officer who from sleep was caught up to heaven. He saw himself in a glorious body and was marching towards the gate of heaven. Soon an angel told him to come and see why he would have to go back to the world to tell the message of salvation with more passion. He was taken to hell and was privileged to converse with a few people.

Among those he spoke with was a woman who died a deaconess in his church. She was a woman of high reputation. She would be ever remembered as an emblem of virtue and philanthropy. She responded to the needs of friends and foes. Here is the conversation that ensued between them:

“Mum, why did you come here, did you miss your way?”
“A-ll-en, this is what unforgiving spirit has for me as a reward”.
“Unforgiving spirit? But you were a deaconess! You mean you didn’t forgive somebody inside or outside the church?”
“It was discovered in the book of record that all my life was pleasant to God except the misunderstanding that happened between the choirmaster and me. By and large, I was older than he and as such I was expecting him to come and apologize, at least courtesy demands for that. I was in this malice when death struck that same month”, she explained.

And then the fire became hotter and she cried “A-a-ah, o-o-o-o-oh! Allen please help me plead. I have forgiven him in my heart”. Allen didn’t know when he began to cry too. His two eyes were shut in sorrow and before he opened his eyes, the tide of hell had rolled on her and swallowed her up. But her church members didn’t know that she is in torment, thirst and hunger. So, they were still busy marking her remembrance year after year!

Dear friend, the word of God says it is appointed for us to die once, and after that to face judgment (Heb. 9:27). No one will live forever here. Even if it was possible to live for a thousand years on earth, it is nothing compared to the endlessness of eternity. What is that thing that will prevent you from entering into the everlasting bliss and joy of heaven? Pray for grace to deal with it now so that it will not be your hindrance on that glorious day. I pray that at the end of earthly life, may we not miss heaven. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: Lord, help me to face and deal with every sin in my life, before it destroys me. In the name of Jesus!
