Unflinching commitment

‘Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” ’ (Jn. 21:15 NKJV).

Peter had just denied Jesus three times. As if that was not bad enough, he now told other disciples that he was going fishing. So they went with him. Jesus later came and had breakfast with them. He then asked Simon: “Do you love me more than these?” Beloved, commitment is the evidence of our love for the Lord. That was exactly what Jesus was driving at. He could have asked Peter: “Why did you deny me?” or “Why did you bring the disciples here to fish?” Instead, He asked the most important question which addressed the heart of the matter: “Do you love me more than these?” The same question comes to us too. How much do we love Him?

About two-and-a-half centuries ago, the Moravian Missionary Movement came up somewhere in Europe. It produced men of unequaled commitment to kingdom service. Some of these men stormed Africa with the good news of the gospel and got to a particular leper colony. Of course, leprosy was the most dreaded plague. These men were forbidden to enter the colony so that they wouldn’t spread the disease on coming out. But their desire to bring those souls to Jesus was so intense that they decided to enter the colony for life, willing to spend the rest of their lives there.

Another group from the same movement also heard of a West Indies island that was occupied only by slaves. In other words, only slaves were allowed to enter there. But their passion to win these souls was overwhelming. So, denying themselves of their freedom, they offered to be bought by the master of that island as lifelong slaves just so that they might take the saving grace of Jesus to those hopeless slaves. It’s only an unparalleled commitment that could have driven these men to let go of everything that this world considers dear. How challenging!

How far have we gone with the Lord? How far are willing to go for Him? What’s your commitment level like; below average, average, or above average? What takes the first position in our wills and desires? Is it money, position, recognition, food, sex, or your job? If Jesus asks you today: “Do you love me above these earthly things?” What will your answer be? May God help us indeed. In Jesus’ name!

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, help me to make you my utmost priority. In the name of Jesus!
