Growing up

‘And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it…’ (I Cor. 3:1,2, KJV).

Babies can’t help themselves, let alone help others. They are always dependent on others. Their knowledge is shallow and they are easily deceived. It requires lot of patience to deal with them because they keep falling short of your expectations. Parents, teachers and adults who deal with children can explain more that it is not an easy task.

Babyhood is a very interesting period in the lives of babies. A baby gets everything it needs without working for it. Babyhood is actually delightful, but perpetual babyhood is a problem. For example, there is a time when a baby is expected to walk. If by then, it has not even started making any attempt to move, it’s an indication of a problem. No parent takes such a situation lightly.

Meanwhile, we are not supposed to grow physically only. We are also supposed to grow mentally, intellectually and spiritually, which leads to maturity. Maturity is a process which shows up with time but it is also influenced by one’s upbringing and the kinds of exposure one has. People mature at different stages of life and in different ways. While some learn and mature fast, others don’t.

It’s also noteworthy that as there are physical babies, so are spiritual babies. A person could be an adult in the physical but be a baby in spiritual matters. Spiritual babies act carnally. They exhibit jealousy and quarrel. They are moved by every little thing. They find it difficult to control their appetite or emotions. They want things whether they of real value or not, as long as their friends have them.

Are you, too, a spiritual baby? Are you more interested in material things than spiritual growth? Dear friend, you need to grow up so that you can go higher spiritually. Receive God’s grace to do so. In Jesus mighty name!

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, help me to grow bigger than my present location. In the name of Jesus!
