Mathew 26:6-16, John 12:1-8
JESUS choose Judas as one of His disciples, JESUS also gave him authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness (Matthew 10:1-4). Also, when he returned from another mission that JESUS sent them, he was one of the people who said “LORD, even the demons obeyed us when we gave them a command in your name!” (Luke 10:17).
Judas was an example of what we would have called “born again” today. He was an example of what we would have called anointed man of GOD today. What else! He was able to cast demons out. He was able to heal all kinds of sicknesses and diseases, be it cancer, HIV/AIDS, stroke, Lung disease, etc. He started receiving gift and money as a result of this and he began to derail without noticing it. By the way, the anointing was still there!
One day, this great Apostle was in need of money and he started thinking of how to get the money and just then he saw Mary pouring a very expensive perfume on JESUS’ feet. Judas could not stay calm anymore, what a waste! He thought. He spoke out “why wasn’t this perfume sold for 300 silver coins and the money given to the poor? He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He carried the money bag and would help himself from it.
But JESUS said “leave her alone!” Mission failed for Judas as well as a bad market for him. What next? He went to the Chief Priest immediately JESUS stopped him from selling the perfume. He said to the Chief Priest ‘what will you give me if I betray JESUS to you?’ They counted out 30 silver coins (the price of a slave Exodus 21:32). A slave/worker/labourer’s daily wage is one silver coin (Matthew 20 :1&2). So 30 silver coins is the monthly salary of a worker in those days.
To Judas, JESUS was like a slave to him. He saw JESUS as an avenue to make money. Why have you also come to Christ? But the worth Mary placed on JESUS was different. To Mary, Jesus was worth more than 300 silver coins and that was the reason she lavished the perfume on HIM. To Judas, JESUS was worth 30 pieces of silver. To Mary, Jesus was worth over 300 silver coins and more.
