Magnetic Appetite

For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together (Mathew 24:28; KJV).

Food is something no one can do without. It is very important for the growth, health and energy supply of the body. All forms of life must, as a matter of necessity, feed if they must survive. If a plant or animal thrives anywhere, it’s because it’s well fed there.

The Bible didn’t talk about spiritual matters alone. It talked about dietary laws that God gave the Israelites (see Leviticus 11 and Deutronomy 14). This shows that God is concerned about the food we eat so that we can live in good health.

In these hi-tech days, foods undergo some treatments, processing, packaging and preservation efforts which can make them stay for weeks and months without going ‘bad’. But nutritionists advise that we should avoid processed, fried, sugary or chemically-preserved foods. Why? They are the cause of many of the present-day diseases.

For our spiritual health too there are days we need to abstain from eating. There are places where we should not eat. The fact that strategic fasting is important in our Christian walk cannot be overemphasized. Eating at a wrong time and place cost a prophet his life (I Kings 13). Jacob got Esau’s blessings because of food (See Genesis 25:29-34; Genesis 37). Inappropriate eating has led to the downfall of many great men.

Food indeed has tempting powers and it requires spiritual discipline to know when and where to say ‘no’ to it. We should eat to live, and not live to eat. I pray; may you receive the grace to discipline your appetite.
