Upsetting Parents

And now a word to you fathers. Don’t make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord (Ephesians 6:4; NLT).

A girl of about eleven once narrated her ordeal to me. Her father had always dealt harshly with her. A couple of days before our discussion, the man had flogged her and threatened to punish her again if she didn’t improve on her academic performance. He was going to travel the following day; and because of the pain and humiliation she suffered, the girl wished him an accident or death on his journey.

The man actually got involved in an accident and his car became a complete write off. I believe that it was actually by God’s mercy that his life was spared without any major injury. The girl later felt sorry and regretted ever wishing him that evil. But then, two days later or so, the man needed to attend to something important at Abuja, and he had to travel again but this time by air.

The day she came to me was the day after the man travelled by air. She came looking for newspapers. She was afraid his plane could have crashed because of her despicable wish. But we thank God that his journey was safe and I had to counsel the girl against wishing others evil. In truth, the man might not mean any harm against the girl but his approach was wrong.

A lot of parents need to reconsider how they discipline their children. Really, some children are difficult, but you should not pester them. You just need to instruct them aright, be firm but flexible, pray for them, be a good example to them and love them whole-heartedly. And then, have faith in God that with time, they will make you proud. I pray, may our children become Godly stars. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: My efforts over my children shall not be wasted. In the mighty name of Jesus!
