Self – discipline

But the fruit of the Spirit is… self-control’ (Galatians 5:22,23, NIV).

Without control over self, success can never be in view. Self-discipline is powered by our determination, through the Holy Spirit’s help, not to yield to anything that could debar us from reaching our God-given aims in life. Many people who have achieved their goals today are students in the School of self-discipline. To go places with God and in life, self-discipline is not negotiable. Though it is not an easy task, self-discipline pays off. It can be tough on you, but it produces a fulfilled you in the end.

Self-discipline starts with the mind. What kinds of thought do you permit in your mind? Is your mind fixed on things that are true, honourable, just, pure, lovely, gracious and excellent? (See Phil. 4:8). Fixing one’s mind on positive and Godly things helps to instill self-discipline. If anxiety, anger, hate, doubt, discouragement and fear are allowed to dominate your heart, then you have lost touch with self-discipline.

Good time management and self-discipline work pari passu. We need to remember that wasted time is not easily recovered. Time is not only money, as they say, it is also life. Individuals who earn millions per hour know the value of 5 minutes. We should spend our passing moments planting a seed that will grow up to give us something bigger and better in the nearest future.

Do you sleep too much? Do you play or talk too much? Do you spend so much money on things you can actually do without? Is there something you dedicate your time and energy to, that doesn’t add real value to your life? Here are a few profitable things you can invest your time in. Study God’s word; pray purposefully; read edifying and inspiring books; acquire new skills and explore new areas of knowledge. Self-discipline can be very demanding at first, but with the help of God’s Holy Spirit, one is trained and benefits immensely from it too. I pray, May God help us in this area. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: I receive the grace of self discipline. In the name of Jesus!
