Unbending persistence

‘Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened’ (Matt. 7:7,8, NKJV).

When He said ‘ask, seek and knock’, the Lord was simply showing us three levels of prayer. While asking is the simple form, seeking and knocking are its intensified forms. Asking shows that we want something. Seeking shows that we lost something. Knocking implies kicking against a closure. Since it works for everyone (according to our opening text), we must keep asking, seeking and knocking until we get that which we desire.

Jesus also said in John 14:14; ‘If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.’ He also said that “…your Father who is in heaven will give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matt. 7: 11). Now when Jesus said ‘anything’, He meant anything good (Matt. 7:11). So ‘anything’ means anything that agrees with God’s word; that will promote God’s kingdom; that will not steal your salvation; that will bring glory to God and that will give you joy.

When Jesus said to ask for anything, the asking is not limited. It means to ask for anything that is good. It also shows the riches and generosity of God. Besides it reveals His love to us, as He doesn’t want to withhold whatever will give us joy and fulfillment (Psa. 84:11b). What we get from Him therefore depends on when we are satisfied. The more we can desire the more He gives to us, provided they are ‘good’ things.

In asking, however, we are expected to ask in the name of Jesus (Jn. 14:14) and to agree with others if they are involved (Matt. 18:19). We must also forgive others when we ask (Mk. 11:25). Cultivating the spirit of thankfulness in asking is a must (Phil. 4:6). We must ask with the right motive for God’s word says “when you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” (Jas. 4:3, NIV)

The Bible says without faith it’s impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6). Faith requires that we keep asking, seeking and knocking; without fainting or giving up in prayer (Lk. 18:1, NLT). Have you given up on asking God? Are you getting too discouraged to seek Him? Have you become so weary of waiting that you stopped knocking? Dear friend, If God says He will do a thing, He will. Our part is to continue in the place of prayer for we ought to pray without ceasing. May we receive renewed prayer strength. In Jesus mighty name!
