Sober reflection

Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself and them that hear thee (I Timothy 4:16, KJV).

Nature made us to see others while we don’t see ourselves. If not for objects that reflect images like mirror, camera, and so on, we wouldn’t have realized what our faces look like or how we appear to others. It’s a similar thing with our perception of wrong things. We find it easier to see the wrongs of others than to see our own faults. For example, we say: A is rude; B talks too much; C is dirty and stinks; D is a lazy drone; E is a pretender; F is selfish and uncaring; G is drab; H is too proud for my liking; and so on.

But have you sincerely considered your own weaknesses too? Do you tell yourself the truth about yourself? You may see a person’s action without knowing the intention behind that action. The question is, ‘Why do we judge ourselves by our intentions but judge others by their actions?’ The Bible warns us: ‘Take heed unto yourself!’ According to Jesus in Matt. 7:1-3; it is easier to see the tiny speck that is in your brother’s eye than to notice the conspicuous log that is in your own eye. When we fail to take heed to ourselves, we judge others wrongly and by so doing, attract judgment on ourselves.

You may be blaming someone for always making you angry when what you need to do is to face the reality that you need help to deal with your impatience and short temper. Likewise you could be blaming someone or an environment for taking you into temptation when you simply need discipline and self-control. God is more concerned about how much you desire to grow spiritually rather than how much you find faults in others or the way you blame them for being your stumbling block.

Friend, let’s stop blaming the government, our religious leaders or anyone at all. It’s time to ask the Holy Spirit to show us a reflection of ourselves through His divine mirror. When we see ourselves in His true light, we will see others from a different perspective.

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, show me the things I need to work on in my life. In the name of Jesus!
