Being a true friend

‘Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family (Proverbs 18:24, MSB).

No man is an island in life. But then, we realise that some folks find it easy to make new friends while others don’t. In any case, we will always need friends at one point or the other.

True friends are known in times of troubles or trials. There’s a saying that our friends know us in prosperity but we know our friends in adversity. Not every friend is available at difficult times but a true friend is. Did you just say there are no true friends anymore? Then try to be one.

Somebody somewhere badly needs a friend indeed. Somebody is about to give up; take a rash decision; or give in to compromise, bitterness, vengeance or some vice. Your friendly concern, encouragement, availability, help, patronage or smile could be the much-needed answer.

Today, why not think of how you can be a friend to someone? Be a reason why someone won’t give up today. Help the rejected. Encourage the depressed. Forgive the offender. Give out to the needy no matter how little. Don’t say there is nothing I can do. You – just you – can make all the difference. I pray; may God make us His instruments of grace. In Jesus name!
