Child-like disposition

Child-like disposition

I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it (Luke 18:17, NIV).

When I was very young, my father usually performed a lot of ‘magical arts’. He could make different things to disappear. For example if he was not comfortable with the fact that football was beginning to get the better of you, he could make it to ‘disappear’. Sometimes, he could make you believe he knew what you were thinking. He could as well rearrange the fingers of his right hand!

Actually I was so mesmerized by his performances that I told one or two friends that my father was a magician. But when I grew much older, I realized that my father was no more a magician than you were a pigeon’s sibling! He only took advantage of my childhood ignorance. Each time I remember some of his tricks, I laugh at my own gullibility.

But then childhood is not a bad thing altogether. At least Jesus said it will take having children’s kind of faith to enter into the kingdom of God. In other words, just like I believed my father’s ‘tricks’ as a child, we are expected to believe God’s words without an iota of doubt or mistrust. And the good thing is that God doesn’t play tricks on us. Actually we doubt God many times because we approach Him like grownups instead of like children. We bring in our reasoning and don’t even mind counseling God on what to do when we don’t understand what He seems to be doing.

God told Jonah to go to Nineveh but he headed for Tarshish. God told our first parents not to eat a particular fruit but Eve reasoned that it was looking nice and it would be great to have a taste of the fruit. God wanted Moses to go and deliver the children of Israel but he felt that God made a mistake. As far as he was concerned anybody was good for such a task except a stammerer like him. Jeremiah too complained that he was too young to do what God had asked him to do.

So many people have said different things about the word of God. The personality of Jesus has been attacked by untold number of people. Some did not believe that there is God while others said that Jesus did not actually die. Some folks bring academic knowledge; personal philosophies, biases, unbelief, and whatever they choose to believe into their perception and understanding of the word of God. They lack child-like faith and so they question the authority of God’s word. Sadly, they missed God by their thinking.

Dear friend, do you do what God’s word says to do or argue with God? Will you prefer to be child-like so as to enjoy God’s best? Will you be ‘foolish’ enough to become wise? Listen to Jesus: “Assuredly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it”. Obviously, you can enter into God’s kingdom today. But you must come as a child. I pray; may you find your way in. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, help me to always come before you with child-like faith. In the name of Jesus!
