Before you relocate

Before you relocate

And a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons (Ruth 1:1, NKJV).

Insecurity, pandemic, disasters and poverty could make people relocate from one place to another. To escape these negative experiences, many people have moved across states, nations and even continents of the world.

I saw a video clip of a Nigerian lady who was narrating her ordeal when they travelled across the Sahara desert (probably to get to Spain – I didn’t get that part of her narration). En route they saw corpses. Some of her co-travellers also fell into the hot sand dune and they couldn’t be traced because the sand simply ‘swallowed’ them. According to her, everyone started drinking their own urine, at a point, just to survive dehydration and to stay alive. Some of her female companions were even raped along the journey. When the lucky survivors eventually made it to their destination, they discovered that the ‘good’ job they were promised before leaving the shores of Nigeria was actually prostitution!

It took some time before I could get my mind off her story. One would also want to look at how they would be able to handle language and cultural differences. Apart from the fact that their hope of getting nice jobs was dashed, how can anyone be sure that they would get good food, comfortable shelter and have access to adequate healthcare?

These days, some husbands relocate from their spouses and children to far away locations in search of greener pasture. Some wives do so too. Some of these relocations are avoidable but many folks still go ahead not considering the impacts this would have on them and their families. Many times spouses and children left behind cry due to lack, loneliness and abandonment. Besides, they are even exposed to physical and emotional danger.

Here is God’s wise counsel from His word: “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have wisdom and show restraint” (Prov. 23:4, NIV). Actually, some things are more important than money: love, peace, family togetherness and serving God. So before making that move, consider it well and ask God to lead you. May we not move to a devouring land like the man in our opening text did (See Ruth 1:1-6). In Jesus mighty name!

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, if I am wrongly positioned (residence-wise or job-wise), deliver me from my unfavourable location. In the mighty name of Jesus!
