Taming the tongue

Taming the tongue

Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips (Psalm 141:3, NIV).

One effective way to check people’s level of spiritual maturity is to observe their utterances. The tongue of most people is their undoing. A person’s words determine the direction his life goes.

Here are some thought-provoking questions we need to ponder on. When was the last time you said something untrue about someone? When was the last time you said something unkind about someone? Are you talkative? Do you slander? Do your words exude grace or breed hate? Do they build or tear down? Friend, you don’t have to yield your tongue as an instrument to the devil.

If a voice recorder is attached to you without your knowledge; are you sure some friends will not detach from you after hearing what you said about them? Are you sure your pastor won’t be shocked about the things you say about him and the church? Are you sure your boss won’t sack you when he hears what you say about him?

Life and death are in the tongue. What you get is a function of the kinds of things you say. Jesus healed the sick; raised the dead and calmed a raging storm with His words. The same Jesus caused a fig tree to dry up with His words. Words can indeed kill or make alive and life’s battles are battles of words! So, mind your words.

It might interest you to know that Satan too speaks. He speaks fear, worry, discouragement, doubts and unforgivingness into people’s minds. Many lost their spiritual strength when they fell for his words. That’s why each time you say a wrong thing, you are helping the devil to do his job. When well-managed, the tongue can be the most helpful tool in this world. And when used wrongly, it becomes a destructive weapon indeed. I pray, may your tongue be a blessing and not a curse. In Jesus mighty name!
