Blessed ones

Blessed ones

‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven’ (Matt. 5:3, NKJV).

In one of His teaching sessions, Jesus revealed different groups of people that should be considered blessed. The first group He mentioned was ‘the poor in spirit’. And why are these people blessed? It’s because the kingdom of heaven belongs to them! As far as I am concerned, anyone who wants to be part of the kingdom of heaven should be interested in this class of people.

To be poor in spirit means to be spiritually poor (Goodnews Bible); to recognize one’s spiritual helplessness (GOD’S WORD Translation); to know that one has great spiritual needs (NCV); to realize one’s need for God (NLT). So, such people constantly seek divine mercy and approval because they believe that their survival depends on doing so. And they are right. Until you see how wretched, helpless, blind and vulnerable you are without Christ, you won’t come to Him, let alone gain entrance into the kingdom of heaven.

People trust in their physical strength, knowledge and wisdom. The rich opine that it’s poverty that makes ‘poor’ people stick to God so He can turn their situations around. They feel that since they are already rich, there’s no need ‘wasting’ their time to seek God. There are some people who are deeply immersed in their academic and ungodly belief that God does not exist. In fact someone once said that God did not create man, but man created God. In other words, the idea that God exists is totally man’s. How sad!

There is no way anyone can enter God’s kingdom without being poor in spirit. Some people believe that the Bible was men’s makeup. Others said Jesus never existed. They claim that everything written about Him is people’s fabrications. I have read many things said by different people against the existence of God and the supremacy of His word. Since such men are not poor in spirit they missed God by their pride.

Are you too poor in spirit? Do you acknowledge your need for God’s help? Do you feel you are okay and free; and so don’t need God? Are you counting on what you call ‘achievements’ on this earth? Has your money, position, connection or power made you forget that you are a mere mortal? Unless you are convinced that you are helpless without God and that without Him you are doomed, you cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven. May you not, by your pride, shut yourself out of God’s grace.

Today’s corporate prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to submit to your Lordship in every area of my life. In the name of Jesus!
