Honing your skills

Honing your skills

‘Then David…struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth’ (I Sam. 17:49 NKJV).

Skills are mostly learned and are needed to be exceptional among others. One of the most important factors to acquiring skills is time. Time is an asset we are all given. But if you don’t make the most of time, time won’t make any difference in your life. So, whatever is taking your time that is not your calling, it is designed by the devil to render you a nonentity in life.

David was separated from city life at a very tender age. He had to leave his brethren for the ‘bush’ so as to raise the family’s flock of sheep. He was lonely and had nothing, except time. Realizing that time was a big asset, he used it to develop himself on how to play the harp and how to throw stones. Later he went to the battlefront and saw a giant called Goliath threatening to overthrow his beloved Israel.

David picked up five smooth stones from a stream and got set to attack Goliath with just a sling (I Sam. 17:40). Goliath laughed at David’s ‘ridiculous’ warfare strategy. But David would not be intimidated. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it from his sling and hit Goliath in the forehead. The stone sank in and Goliath fell! David had just triumphed with just his first shot!

When you have used the time well enough to acquire a skill in your area of calling, you may not need five opportunities. One is enough for you. Remember that David had earlier used stones to kill two dangerous animals that attacked his flock. So he was prepared to confront Goliath. More often than not, it is lack of skill that makes people use a lot of time to achieve little or nothing. We need to seek God to lead us into what He has called us to be. Then, we need to invest time into acquiring the needed skills in our area of calling.

Whatever you are called to do, keep learning how to do it better and better. Learn to subject yourself to spiritual and mentorship training so as to be thoroughly equipped. How you began is not as important as how fast you move as from now. If you can see that poverty and nonachievement are after you, your speed should be different from other’s speed. May God strengthen our resolution to become the best version of ourselves. In Jesus’ mighty name!

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, make my life a life of great impact. In the mighty name of Jesus!
