Look and live

Look and live

So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived’ (Number 21:9, NKJV).

The Israelites were on their journey to their promised land. But they became impatient along the way and began to murmur against God and Moses because they had neither food nor water except the manna God had been feeding them with. God became angry and sent poisonous snakes among them, and many of them were bitten and died. They therefore cried out to Moses for help. That was what led to what we have in today’s Opening Text (See Number 21:4-9).

What Moses did was actually a shadow of what would happen to Jesus hundreds of years after. When Jesus came physically to the earth, He said: “…as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so I, the Son of Man, must be lifted up on a pole, so that everyone who believes in me will have eternal life” (Jn. 3:14,15, NLT). We can see that the reason why Jesus was crucified (lifted up) was similar to the reason why Moses lifted up the bronze snake in the wilderness.

The Israelites’ sin against God attracted that evil; that’s the same way man’s sins attract evil consequences today. Just as they died due to sin then, sin also leads to death today both in the spiritual and physical sense; for the Bible says the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23). When they saw that they were dying, the Israelites called unto God and He gave them the ‘lifted serpent’ solution. Today also, there’s a ‘lifted Jesus’ solution for whosoever shall call on the Lord; for the Bible says, …whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13, KJV).

Another interesting truth is that the solution then was for “whosoever was bitten by the snake.” Today too, the solution is for “whosoever believes in Him” (Jn. 3:15,16). One more thing: every individual needed to do a personal looking at the solution. Similarly, everybody needs to do a personal believing in Jesus today. No one can do it on another’s behalf. So, dear friend, I encourage you to look to Jesus today and live; for whosoever believes in Him, from within him shall flow rivers of living waters. Receive the grace to do so. In Jesus mighty name!

Today’s corporate prayer: Lord Jesus I look unto you, as the author and finisher of my faith. Henceforth, I walk in your life and light. In Jesus glorious name!
