Looking but not seeing

Looking but not seeing

If you were blind, you wouldn’t be guilty,” Jesus replied. “But you remain guilty because you claim you can see (John 9:41, NLT).

Jesus just made a pronouncement before we came to our opening text of today. Listen to Him: …for judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind (Jn. 9:39). So the Pharisees who were standing there heard him and asked, “Are you saying we are blind?” And that was what led to the statement in Jn. 9:41 above.

Many of us are ignorant of our ignorance. We think we know much whereas we know just little. It’s not a problem not to know but it becomes a problem when we approach God like we know it all. Here were people who knew the law very well. In fact before one could become a member of the Pharisees, he must have been through a lot of study and memorization of the laws. But because it was all based on man’s efforts to be self-righteous, it didn’t produce a Godly change in the lives of the Pharisees.

If you go through the whole chapter nine of the book of John, you will see that the Pharisees were not happy that a man that was born blind could now see! Why weren’t they happy? It’s because his healing took place on a Sabbath day – a day when no one was expected to work.

As far as they were concerned, it was better for the man to remain blind than to receive his sight on the Sabbath day! How startling! And how could such people claim they were not blind? There are people like that today. They want to uphold their doctrines, even when a life is at stake. Such people are like the Pharisees. There is no mercy in their heart, yet they hardly miss any service. They dress and talk sanctimoniously. They even hold big positions in the church. But they need a change of heart.

It’s important to come to Jesus today and admit that you are blind. Blind means not seeing things the way they are. Jesus can open the eyes of your understanding. If you claim you are alright and don’t need Him, there’s no way He can help you. But if you humbly ask for His help, He will make you see indeed.

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, purge my heart and give me a new heart of deep understanding of you. In the mighty name of Jesus!
