Raging temper

Raging temper

He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city (Proverbs 16:32, KJV).

Anger is a strong feeling of displeasure, hostility or antagonism towards someone or something. Anger is triggered by a number of factors like worry, being upset, frustrated or offended. Sometimes it could also be stirred by hastiness or getting late for an important event. When someone speaks to us or answers us rudely, it could also arouse our anger. When someone keeps irritating us by doing something we dislike, it also gets us angry.

Meanwhile, anger could be negative or positive. There is a positive anger that erupts within us when, for example, someone is mistreated, when injustice is exalted above justice or when the wrong is promoted above the right. That was the kind of anger responsible for Jesus’ reaction when he saw what some people had turned His Father’s house to.

However, when anger is motivated by selfishness, hatred, jealousy, fear or bad temper, it is a negative anger. When your anger makes you to hurt others; cause damages; hurt your spouse; abuse your children or displease God; you have a serious work to do.

Some people have killed others in an outburst of temper. Others have, under the influence of anger, said the best things they regret ever saying. A few have lost their marriages or some great opportunities to a fit of anger. Do you know a man in the Bible called Moses? Despite his toils and efforts to lead his followers to their glorious destination, anger prevented him from entering the promised land. “It is better to overcome anger than to overcome a city”, says God’s word. I pray: May God help us to overcome every form of destructive anger. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to develop self-control and help me to subdue and overcome anger. In the name of Jesus!
