The joy of repentance

The joy of repentance

In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:10, NIV).

The word of God contains a narration about a prodigalprodigal young man who suddenly found home boring (See Lk. 15:11-24). He no longer enjoyed the company of his father, sibling or friends. He had heard that his age mates were free and enjoying life to the fullest in a particular far country. He could no longer wait to be part of all the captivaing things he had heard about this country of sin.

So what did he do? He went to his father and demanded for his share of his father’s estate. His father obliged. A few days later he packed all his belongings, took a trip to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money on riotous and wild living. He lived in pleasure and emptied his purse earlier than he could have imagined. He became so broke that none of his ‘friends’ could help him. They all deserted him. Finally he landed a ‘great’ job feeding pigs!

He thought he knew when to stop. But the force of sin soon had its tight grip on him and he couldn’t set himself free. He found himself in the worst kind of captivity. Such is the deception of sin. It looks attractive at first but it later stings like a scorpion. At first, it’s always like a controllable, harmless pet but it soon grows up to become an untamable monster! Sin may satisfy in the beginning but it soon produces a series of troubles.

This young man saw his own pitiable situation. He regretted every step he took and began to think about home. Sometimes, God permits a trouble to come our way so that we can think. The young man might not have thought of going back home if he hadn’t found himself in a pitiable situation. The devil always wants to keep man from thinking but God has a way of bringing him into it. The young man eventually made up his mind. He journeyed back home and was deeply sorry for his evil act.

His journey back home was unlike his departure. He left home with full pockets but returned home empty. He was expensively dressed when he left home but now he was bare-footed, ragged and famished. He had many aspirations when he was leaving home but now his only hope was that his father would forgive him and accept him. Fortunately for him, his father had mercy on him and he was restored home.

Dear friend, nothing disappoints like sin. Nothing destroys faster than refusal to come back home to God. To tarry longer in the state of sin is so very dangerous indeed. Jesus is waiting earnestly to welcome you back home. Will you come? May God help you to do so. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: My Father and Lord, I am returning to you today. Have mercy upon me and restore all I have lost. In the mighty name of Jesus!
