Treasuring purity in all things
Daniel 1:8 “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”
The purity of heart the LORD wrought in us, is of great treasure, and the LORD expects us to conserve it as a great pearl. Holiness of heart is not cheap, and so should not be carelessly conserved. Rather, it’s to be treasured by true believers more than anything, and more than life itself.
- We saw Joseph who treasured purity more than fleshly pleasure.
- We saw Daniel who treasured purity more than satisfactory appetite.
- We saw Enoch who treasured purity more than worldly interference.
- We saw Job who treasured purity more than material benefits.
- We saw Zeccariah and Elizabeth who treasured purity more than marital blessedness.
- We saw Stephen who treasured purity even at the expense of his life when he was being martyred.
- We saw Paul who treasured purity more than marriage.
These are men subject to like passion as we are, and they kept that standard of purity and holiness so high among themselves. They threw away reputation and cleaved to the gracious purity of God in their lives.
We are admonished to make purity the watchword of our lives because God is of purer eyes and cannot behold evil neither can he look on iniquity. If we are not to count the blood of the new covenant as an unholy thing, then we should strive to make purity count in our day to day lives as well pleasing unto the LORD, who out of his free love, mercy, and riches of his grace has begotten us in Christ Jesus.
Talk about it everywhere you go. The purification and the cleansing of the heart. Stand by it at all times, and manifest it daily by the life you live. Like the Rechabites who kept the commandments of their father Jonadad and said no to wine, so should we in like manner say no to all forms and appearances of sin. Keeping ourselves in sanctification and honour, preserving that good conscience, and the purity of heart.
Purity, holiness, and sanctification go together as regards the cleansing of the heart. This is what differentiates true Christians from nominal, religious, superficial, church goers. True Christians take purity as their priority, and everyday of their lives, they live according to the principles of scriptural purity. They esteem it higher than life, money, certificates, pleasure, fame, reputation, marriage, family members, etc.
And they are ready to do all they can to protect it. They are never weary in their daily duty of conserving purity of heart. You know why? Because they believe in the word of God. And they know with full assurance, that the words of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Saviour of the world cannot fail. Which says, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
