Trusting God when it makes and doesn’t make sense

Trusting God when it makes and doesn’t make sense

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.”

Always trust the Lord completely. Do not think that your own wisdom is enough. Remember the Lord in everything that you do. If you do, he will show you the right way to go.

Eight months after I began training as a missionary I got a proposal from a fellow trainee. We had misunderstanding, argued over everything but still enjoyed each other’s company. So here I was, cooking in the kitchen when he popped the question in the most unromantic environment. We talked through it, I prayed and said YES!!!

How did I know that he was the one for me?

Hmm, I would love to tell you that I dreamt, saw a vision or heard God’s audible voice saying “Blessing, Emmanuel is your husband, marry him” (laughs). None of these happened to me even though I’m a missionary but yes, I was convinced.

Then, how did I know that he is God’s will for me?

First, I had been praying for a particular kind of guy for a while, I prayed vaguely until I came across 1Timothy 3: 1-7, it talks about the qualities of anyone who desired to be a bishop or deacon when Paul wrote to Timothy.

Asking God for a bishop was seemingly like too ambitious for me at that time but I like the character traits there and wanted a man that will be above reproach, that will have eyes for me alone and not be looking elsewhere (husband of one wife), temperate, self- controlled, respectable, hospitable, teachable etc. I didn’t know where this man will emerge from but I kept praying.

As I prayed, it looked like all the men who had these qualities are either all married or were engaged to someone else (laughs) and it looked like I was being really ambitious. So when I met him, I had written him off and wasn’t expecting or had any emotional attraction towards him. As we argued and disagreed over issues I realised I had misjudged this guy.

Overtime, I started seeing the qualities of teachability, hospitality, Self- control, gentleness in him and I became attracted to him. In my prayer journal I would tell God that I liked him and wouldn’t mind this kind of guy as a spouse. I knew he liked me but didn’t know what he thought of me as a would be spouse.

So when he popped the question, I already knew my answer before I said yes. But since a lady had to be sure that she’s not making a mistake I had to pray about it again to be sure I was not just emotionally lusting after him…. (To be continued)

Summarily, walking with God is a journey of trust. It doesn’t have to make sense before it is God and even when it makes sense we still need to trust God’s guidance through it all. It’s in the place of prayers that we acknowledge God in all our ways, it’s in the place of prayers that we pour our frustrations, woes, fears, disappointments and all to God. And it’s in the place of prayers that a sweet intimate relationship with Jesus is built.

What is your prayer life like?
Are you growing intimacy with God through the pains and gains or are you becoming distant with God and feeling like he’s unaware of your troubles?

Dearest reader, the Lord loves you and is so concerned about your life and desires an intimate relationship with you. When next you pray, talk to him like you would a friend. God bless you
