Wind
‘And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm’ (Mark 4:39, RSV).
Negative winds should be anticipated in life. Your sail cannot be smooth from the beginning to the end. We don’t need to commit any great sin before winds come our way. Even truly anointed ministers come face to face with terrible winds. Many times, one’s kind of wind is a function of how far he’s to go. Even our Master and Saviour, Jesus, was not spared by negative winds. Obviously winds of life are very rude and have respect for no one.
When confronted by the tempest, it is wise to see how the Lord handled it. After all, He is our best example in everything. The first thing we observed was that Jesus was resting in the very midst of a life-threatening tempest. Having a God-kind of rest and assurance is a basic attitude of faith.
Mind you, the rest meant here is different from a ‘what-will-be-will-be’ or an ‘I-don’t-care’ attitude. Lack of divine rest explains why many Christians run from pillar to post in the name of seeking for help. Sadly many of such Christians end up in stronger entanglements.
Some other Christians are making efforts but carnal ones. They are like the disciples who were doing everything to calm the storm. Unfortunately, their best (human) effort was no match for the kind of force that was confronting them.
In the same way there are people who have been trying so much in their human knowledge and power that they are now exhausted. They say, ‘I have done all I know to do without results.’ Beloved friend, it’s time to use the method of the Master; for human methods won’t work.
Jesus was called to help. He arose and rebuked the wind. He said to the sea, “Peace, be still”, and that was it. Jesus spoke to the wind. He addressed the situation. After there was a calm Jesus scolded the disciples for their fear. In other words He was teaching them that they could have done the same thing He did, instead of exhausting their strength for nothing.
Jesus addressed the problem, thus teaching us that we can and should speak to our unfavourable situations. If the wind could hear Jesus’ rebuke; then, our situations too can hear our rebuke. May every wind confronting us lose its power as we confront it henceforth. In Jesus name!
