An Encounter: How I Met Jesus

The encounter I had with Jesus several years ago is ever fresh in my memory. It was my new birth. There’s this saying that Christians have two birthdays. One is the day you were born and the other is the day you met Jesus.

Many Christians can’t possibly recall the exact date they had an encounter with Jesus. However, the experience will always remain engraved in one’s heart forever. I’m not proud to say that I belong to the category of persons who can’t recall the exact date they surrended their lives to Jesus. Nevertheless, the encounter is something I would never forget even if I wanted to.

Before I Had An Encounter with Jesus

As a child, I knew about God to a considerable extent. Having been born into a Christian home, attended Church services regularly and was religiously committed in some capacities. In spite of these, I really didn’t have any memorable encounter as a Christian nor had a solid assurance of salvation. Although, I thought I was born-again (saved) because I knew I loved God and just wanted to live right and make Heaven at the end of it all. But that wasn’t the case. The fact was, I wasn’t saved, I erroneously thought I was.

More so, I knew God detests sin a whole lot. But during my period of lack of understand of God’s words and His precepts generally; I totally thought it was okay to live just as I dimmed fit. The misconception I lived with, was the fact that I could actually commit sin at will and just ask God to forgive me later. I lived this way until the age of nineteen, that when I finally had a real encounter with Jesus.

How I Met Jesus  Finally

Before I had an encounter with Jesus, I’ve heard lots of great life changing sermons during services. None of those had effect on me to make me. And unlike most persons who gave their lives to Christ in church, probably after a great sermon. Mine was quite a different kind of encounter. I encountered Jesus right at home, on a cool evening. I was reading a Christian book, alone at home that fateful evening. I can’t possibly recall the title nor the author of the book except the powerful message it carried.

The author of the book happened to be a former worshipper of the devil. Had met with the devil due to the position she occupied in the devil’s kingdom. But that, wasn’t what got me transfixed. But the things she revealed about the power of the believer (Christian) which even the devil is afraid of.

Surprisingly, from reading, I got into another realm. Words will fail me to describe how it was like to be surrounded by God’s awesome presence at that moment. As well as, the joy and peace that came thereafter that reached the very deep depth of my soul. The divine encounter was priceless. You know what the book of Luke 15:7 says. I could literally see and feel multitude of angels singing and rejoicing because of just me.

Luke 15:7, “Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”

An Invitation to God’s Kindgom

Finally, I will tell you this from experience that you can’t possibly live a fulfilled life here on heart without Jesus. And even worse is the terrible truth that no one can see God’s kingdom without Jesus. Consequently, make up your mind to give it all up for Him who suffered beyond words can express on the cross for those sins you’re currently living in. You’re telling yourself that you’re still young. Well, no, you’re not. Or you’re saying you’ve still got time but you don’t own your life, God does. Besides, Christ can return any minute. It’s better to be prepared than to be sorry for eternity.

Pray this simple prayer if you want to invite Jesus into your life now.

Lord Jesus  I’ve realized I’ve missed it for too long. I acknowledge the fact that I’m a sinner but right now, I’m giving up those sins. Cleanse me and accept me into your Kindgom. Henceforth, be my Lord and Savour. Amen!
