The Easu Kind of Brothers

The Easu Kind of BrothersThe Easu Kind of Brothers

Genesis 26:34

Esau goofed when he married without seeking the counsel of his parents. He must have thought : “I am 40 years old. I am old enough to start the family of my own.” He missed it further by marrying two foreign wives who didn’t know about God, and had served idols all their lives.

Men fail to learn from the life of Esau. We should not rush into marriage without adequate preparation. He didn’t seek godly counsel. He just went into marriage( Genesis 28 :8). We must seek godly counsel from at least two of these sources; our parents, pastors, mentor, friends, counsellor, church elders, godly role models, leaders etc.

These people have passed through this stage, hence, they have enough experience on marriage. They should be able to point you to the right right. And when they give us their godly counsel, we should listen and not be like Samson who insisted that his parents must marry a heathen Philistine lady for him. Because of the lust of the eyes, he asked his parents to get her for him because he ‘loved’ her. And I know we know how the story ended. You can see Judges 14.

We should listen to godly counsel as it will help us both before and after marriage. Esau married two Hittites ladies. Amos 3 : 3 said : “can two walk together, except they agree?” He didn’t see any member of his parents’ relatives to marry. He didn’t see any lady who knew and served the living God to marry. He went ahead and married idol worshippers.

Many Christian brothers are making the same mistake today. As they won’t get engaged with ladies they found in a decent place. Just like Esau, the ladies that get their attention are ladies in clubs and hotels, ladies that expose their breasts, prostitutes, unbelievers, prayerless ladies, abusive ladies, fighting/troublesome ladies, etc

Esau was busy looking for the wrong attributes. He forgot to check their character and attributes. He was busy looking for ladies with ‘dangerous extensions’ and beauty that captivates. Brothers of today must not follow the footsteps of Esau.

There are so many things we should look for in ladies before we start a relationship with them. Things like, is she a child of God? How is her character and behaviour? Does she have good manners? Is she submissive? Is she friendly and accommodating? Does she genuinely love your parents? If she becomes more successful than you, will she become proud? Does she love God and the things of God? What are her priorities? Is she diligent? Esau didn’t consider all these factors, no wonder they frustrated his parents.

May God help us not to marry ‘Hittites’ ladies as wives in Jesus name.
