Which Righteousness?

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith (Philiphians 3:9, KJV).

‘Is any man righteous?’ This is a question many people have asked. Isa. 64:6 says ‘all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.’ Actually no one can attain righteousness by his own efforts. The Bible actually talked about the gift of righteousness (See Romans 5:17). Life is a gift. Salvation is a gift. So is righteousness.

As God’s gift of life keeps us alive, so does God’s gift of righteousness keep us righteous. Without this understanding, we will be ‘trying’ to be righteous. At best, the kind of righteousness we achieve by so doing is human righteousness, which rests on keeping the law (Philiphians 3:9).

And when you stumble under the heaviness of its burden, the devil challenges your stand and makes you feel too unqualified, even to reconnect to God. Apostle Paul went after the righteousness which is of God by faith, not human efforts. So he was righteous as far as the word of God is concerned. But some people ask: ‘If we are righteous, how come we still fall into sin?’

Any time we discover we’ve fallen short of God’s expectations, sincere righteousness is to ‘confess our sin, (for God) is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness’ (I John 1:9). But does this give us the license to cultivate a habit of sinning? No way! (See Romans 6:1,2). I pray; may our faith rest on God’s righteousness, not self righteousness which fails. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: O Lord, reveal to me whatever is not right with me and give me the grace to overcome it. In the mighty name of Jesus!
