Inflow and outflow

Inflow and outflow

.. If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water (John 7:37,38 KJV).

Thirst and hunger are undeniable part of human existence. So man craves for food and water everyday. But in our text today, Jesus used an if when he said …if any man thirst… definitely, this kind of thirst (or desire) is not everyman’s experience. While natural thirst is involuntary, the kind of thirst Jesus was talking about here is voluntary. It’s something you choose to have or not.

Another point of interest here is that Jesus has what to quench everyone’s thirst with – a special drink called living water. Besides, there are no limits to the quantity that one can get. The only limit is one’s level of thirst. As long as you want more you can always get it. That’s why Jesus said rivers of living waters can flow out of our bellies.

How could this happen? It’s because that drink represents the infilling and indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. This creates in the Christian a channel for the outflow of the living water, as supplied by the Holy Spirit. The very life of God flows through our lives and words and it can’t be absolutely explained in the natural sense. Jesus said, …the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.  (Jn. 6:63). Since we have drunk of the Holy Spirit our words too carry life because they come from the temple of the Holy Ghost within us, that is, our ‘recreated’ spirit man.

Unlike the unregenerated people of the world, we don’t have an outflow of bitterness, sorrow, uncontrollable anger, unkindness, evil thoughts, and so on. Instead, the Holy Spirit helps us to love, be kind and makes us bear good fruits. As God’s children, just as the Holy Spirit impacts blessings upon us, we impact grace upon our world. We are so blessed indeed. Praise God!

Today’s corporate prayer: Holy Spirit, I desire more of you everyday. Make me your dwelling place forever. In the name of Jesus!
