“It doesn’t matter” does matter

There are many actions that we put up as believers despite being aware that those actions are against God’s precepts. These actions are referred to as presumptuous or wilful sins. Some careless believers often call it little or minor sins and many console themselves with “it doesn’t matter” after committing these sins.

Nonetheless, in my walk with God, I’ve realized that, most of the little sins you commit willfully as a believer and say “it doesn’t matter” does matter before God. Those sins have the capability to pull you out of faith. This doesn’t just happen spontaneously, no, it actually takes sometime. Some believers have backslidded from constantly committing those sins they consider little.

The Effects of Making Sin a Habit

The problem with indulging in little sins and saying “it doesn’t matter” can be likened to an experiment that was carried out by some scientists several years ago. They set out to find out the adaptability of frog to different temperatures. First, they dropped a life frog into boiling water, the frog was dead in less than a minute.

Secondly, they dropped another life frog into a semi-boiling water, the result was, the frog showed evidence of pain immediately by moving frantically. More so, the movement became slower as it gradually started dying. It finally died completely after a couple of minutes as the temperature was increased.

The third experiment however, had a unique result. The third life frog was placed in a lukewarm water, the frog displayed signs of being very comfortable in its new environment. The temperature was increased only very mildly at intervals. Even when the temperature was at 360° the frog was still alive far much longer than the two frogs in the first and second experiment.

My point is this, sin starts out like the third case in the above experiment. The first time you commit a sin presumptuously, you feel a little remorse and return to God in repentance. The next time, you commit the same sin, the remorse is less prominent or totally non-existent in some cases. Gradually, it becomes a norm to continue committing that same sin (and others that would set in too) over and over again.

Thereafter, your conscience would slowly begin to adapt to sin, just like in the case of the frog in the third experiment. Yes, eventually, you would become comfortable living a life marked by sins despite being a believer. The devil would at this time, sit laughing at your cluelessness because he knows you’re already at the verge of completely losing your salvation.

Undoubtedly, the worst mishap that can happen to you as a believer is not to be sensitive enough to realize when you’ve fallen out of Grace. In other words, to erroneously think you’re still on the path that leads to life not knowing that your name has been blotted out of the book of life.

The dangers of committing sins presumptuously as a Christian

Some believers have lost their salvation because of constantly indulging in presumptuous sins.

Hence, I would have you know that those sins you call minor and redard as “it doesn’t matter” does matter after all. Some of the dangers of committing these sins presumptuously (deliberately or wilfully) are as follows:

    1.    It leads to lose of faith/salvation.

    2.  It Hinders Spiritual Growth

You can’t possibly be toiling with God and expect your relationship with Him to grow. One of the keys to spiritual growth is righteousness.

   3.  It Leads to Spiritual Death

Committing sins wilfully as a Christian and constantly feeling entitled to God’s forgiveness can actually lead to spiritual death. A believer can be said to be spiritually dead he/she has been totally cut off from God’s presence. And such a person no longer has a stake in God’s kingdom.

   4.  It has the tendency to prevent the unbelievers around you from coming to Jesus.

It will disqualify and deprive you from making heaven: God has a standard, His standard is His Word. And this can’t be reduced for anyone however, His grace is always available to help everyone of us grow to the standard He has set for us.

In view of the foregoing, I would like to remind you that there are severe consequences attached to knowing the truth about God’s word but choosing to live in disobedience instead.

Romans 1:18 says “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”

Finally, I would leave you with the scripture below. It’s to serve as a reminder of what God expects from us as believers.

1 Timothy 4:12, 15 and 16 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 15: Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16: Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
