‘…let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress’ (Hebrews 12:1, NLT).
Some people live in a simple way while others live extravagantly. While those who belong to the first group have little needs, those belonging to the second class have unending lists of wants (not needs). In a bid to get all the “gettables”, even many Christians bring unnecessary weights upon themselves. And by so doing, they lose their focus on their spiritual journey and their place in His service.
Everyone’s extra weight is whatever gradually takes his attention away from his service and commitment to the Lord. For example, a Christian lady might get so focused on her ‘dressing’ to the point of losing her place in Christ. When one gets too preoccupied with the thoughts of latest fashions and ways of dressing, one might start to lose touch with the Master. Love of money is it for some people. Some folks work from morning till late every day, leaving no time to fellowship intimately with God. The pursuit of money is another distraction that hinders Christians from running their races effectively.
As for some folks, they are more concerned about being socially correct than being right with God. As far as they meet with the expectations of men, they care less even if their relationship with God has been affected. They stay in touch with men but have lost touch with God. Some who could pray for hours now struggle to pray for twenty minutes. People who were always preoccupied with reading their Bible or other Christian literatures now spend most of their time on their social network platforms.
Some people’s weight is worry. They worry about every little thing. And Satan, having discovered that that’s their weakness, keeps creating avenues for worry around them, so as to hinder their spiritual progress. Constant anger is another weight that a lot of people carry. For some, it is bitterness and unforgiving spirit. We know ourselves very well and should be able to tell what affects us spiritually. Developing a strong prayer life will gradually take us to a point where these weights would be shed off. May we get there. In Jesus name!
