Negative Words

Negative Words

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger (Proverbs 15:1, NLT).

Anger is one emotion that gets the best of most of us. Different things get us aggravated; and the degrees to which we express our anger vary. But one thing is always the case. Our anger is mainly caused by the differences between the ‘parties involved’ and us. If we understand that we are all wired differently, it may help us to make some allowances for others’ perception; thus, reducing the chance of angry words or reactions.

There is a Chinese proverb that if you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow. It was Elizabeth Kenny that opined that ‘he who angers you conquers you’. That’s not all. Sydney Harris too has a question for you: ‘If a small thing has the power to make you angry, does that not indicate something about your size?’

By opening your mouth in anger, you run the risk of making the best speech you will ever regret. And once you say it, it can’t be retracted. Even after you have forgotten about them, angry words still retain their power to upset and cause bitterness. So before releasing those harsh words, ask yourself if your anger is proper and if you are ready for its aftermath.

Finally, it is important to note that without receiving enough dose of God’s word and spending good time in praying, you can’t receive enough strength to overcome anger. Anger cannot be overcome by physical will or resolution. It takes the strength received in God’s presence; feeding on His word and praying. I pray, may we receive this strength. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: Every demonically-empowered anger running in my blood; be flushed out by the blood of Jesus. In Jesus mighty name!
