Preach the word (2)

Preach the word (2)

Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching (II Timothy 4:2, NKJV).

When we understand that the Word of God has transforming powers, we will always want to spread it. Long ago, I came across a book whose title I can’t even recollect now. In it I came across this startling chain of divinely orchestrated labour. Here it goes:

In 1858, a Boston Sunday School teacher named Kimball began visiting one of his students at the shoe store where he worked as a clerk. Eventually, he led him to Christ. That student’s name was D. L. Moody. Twenty-one years later, Moody, now an evangelist, visited London and a great spiritual awakening took place. F. B. Meyer, a local pastor, went for Moody’s preaching, and his life was transformed.

Later, Meyer went to America to speak and in one of his meetings a student called J. Wilbur Chapman came to Christ. Chapman became active in the YMCA, where he met and disciple a former baseball player named Billy Sunday. Sunday became a great revivalist and in one of his crusades in Charlotte, North Carolina, a group of business men were won to Christ.

A year later they decided that their city needed another crusade, so they invited Mordecai Hamm, a Baptist Evangelist, to be their speaker. After three weeks, Hamm left town, discouraged because he’d only made one convert, a 12-year-old boy called Billy Graham. And the rest is history! One Sunday school teacher started it all!

It’s so fulfilling and joyous to see souls come into God’s kingdom through what looks like feeble efforts. It should inspire us to continuously sow the seed of God’s word. Learning daily at the feet of the Master facilitates this. Jesus said: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…” (Matt. 11:29, NIV). Anyone who has truly met Jesus always has something to say about his or her encounter(s) with the Master. God is about using us to sow the seed of life that will germinate to affect uncountable souls for Christ. We only need to yield to Him. May God help us to do so. In Jesus name!

Today’s corporate prayer: Lord Jesus, you are the greatest fisher of men. Make me your fishing net to bring multitudes into your boat of redemption. In the name of Jesus!
